Whale Fall references the recurring pattern of rising and falling throughout human and more-than-human histories. The fall of civilisations, falling from grace, the fall of ‘man’ and our current potential for falling in the climate crisis. Falling is a sublime catastrophe and the catalyst for new possibilities. Whale Fall is a sculptural work, responding to idea of the fall as generative through the analogy of the whale fall. A whale fall occurs when a whale dies at sea, as it falls to the ocean floor, new ecosystems form around its body. Through this lens, falling is an act of transformation in response to disaster. Whale Fall is composed of a multitude of hand blown glass lenses sealed with Pacific Ocean water. The form of the work follows the fall, transforming and mutating as the sculpture descends.
